About this coffee

Our new terroir coffee Nahua comes from the Puebla region in southern Mexico.
Our new partner, La Laja offered us this first honey processed coffee this year. The awareness of water consumption during the preparation of coffees is starting to have a significant impact because more and more of you are favoring honey and natural processes. Our Nahua honey is therefore very timely.

La Laja is a Mexican coffee production company present in southern Mexico with three production sites, in Puebla, Veracruz and Chiapas. La Laja brings together several farms in these 3 regions. La Laja is certified Rainforest Alliance, UTZ (a sustainability certification program for coffee, cocoa and tea) and 4C (certification that works for sustainable supply chains in coffee and improving the standard of living of farmers). The company has also developed social and economic programs such as the production of plants delivered to producers, training, credits and participation in production. At a societal level, La Laja works to develop leisure activities for the most precarious households, to develop mutual aid in the community and education.

Nahua comes from three farms near a wet mill which has a production capacity of 150,000 kilos of cherries per day. The three farms are the Finca Husmaya managed by Rodolfo Carcamo Galindo, the Finca La Puebla managed by Nicolas Martinez Almanza and La Nueva finca managed by Juan Manuel Chacon. Each farm employs around 20 people all year round to maintain the plantations, fertilize the soil, renew the oldest plots. They use cascara to fertilize the soil and some plots are monovarietal. The manager who centralizes the work done on these 3 farms is Gustavo.

The region Veracruz

In Mexico, the main coffee-growing regions are Chiapas and Veracruz. The latter is located on the Gulf of Mexico, on a volcanic chain, where coffee trees are grown at the highest altitudes, between 1,000 and 1,600 metres. Veracruz is home to Mexico's highest peak, Pico de Orizaba.

Coffee has been grown in Veracruz for more than two centuries. It was introduced by Spanish settlers at the end of the 18th century and over time coffee growing spread throughout the region. Today, most coffee farms are small, family-run operations, with producers committed to sustainable, environmentally friendly farming practices such as shade-grown coffee and organic farming. The region has many natural water sources and coffee is traditionally prepared using the washed method.
