About this coffee

If you can feel the producers’ enthusiasm and desire to promote a better and more humane world for future generations when tasting this coffee, then they have succeeded! This coffee is produced at the Clave de Sol farm at an altitude of 1,300 metres by a passionate producer who believes in organic production and defends the quality of her work. Birds and trees are preserved there through use of responsible production methods which have been developed over the years, sometimes even in contradiction with the traditional practices already in place.
The farm works in partnership with Cafés Organicos Marcala, a private company with a good understanding of the coffee industry and which uses sustainable farming methods. The cooperative supports producers wishing to introduce state-of-the-art organic production techniques. It works hand in hand with its farms to promote the switch from conventional farming to an organic agriculture underpinned by strong environmental values. The 700 or so producers who work with the company receive regular training in coffee cupping and organic farming. The cooperative also subsidises the education of local children in order to help future generations.

What is a WOMEN COFFEE?

We decided to support women producers by identifying their coffees with a WOMEN COFFEE logo. Why?
Because women play a vital role in the industry, they have a strong involvement in the farms and represent more than 70% of the labour force in the fields, harvesting, sorting the beans...
However, only 10% of them are entrepreneurs and only 20% are landowners (including joint ownership with their spouses).
Increasing the income of women producers has a direct and positive impact on the education of children and the comfort of the home.

The farm Clave de Sol

The Clave de Sol farm is located in the village of El Rincon in Marcala, in the department of La Paz, at an altitude of 1,300 metres. Coffee has been grown with passion there for generations, and production now extends over 8.5 hectares. This year, the region produced 112 bags of green coffee. The farm is named after a musical note that symbolises life, on account of its round shape; a beautiful image and a reminder that the Clave de Sol farm does everything possible to preserve its surrounding fauna and flora through concrete actions. Trees are planted to create shade, organic fertilisers are used designed to strengthen the plants and coffee trees, the fruit trees are harvested and the coffee plants are renewed regularly. All are actions that embody the farm’s values. Clave de Sol is practically attached to COMSA, and they have been working together for years. This physical proximity also says a lot about Betty’s philosophical belief and commitment to the company. The farm is managed according to an agroforestry system and has its own mill (húmedo and seco beneficio, African beds, etc.). The main varieties grown at the farm are Icatu and Typica. Betty also produces Bourbon, Lempira and Parainema.

A few words about Miriam Elisabeth Perez

Miriam Elizabeth Pérez likes to be called Betty. She is one of the most influential people at the COMSA cooperative and in the municipality of Marcala from which she comes. She discovered the world of coffee at a very young age, because she was just 6 when her grandfather, whom she has always considered as her father, began taking her with him to his plantations. It was there that she learned how to pick, cut and even transport coffee. Still passionate about the industry today, she is proud to have been able to learn so much from her grandfather’s experience and know-how. Betty inherited 2.5 hectares 12 years ago and bought 6 more with her husband a few years back. They therefore represent the third generation of her family to produce coffee. Betty is a woman with a mission, a mother of 5 and wife to Rodolfo, one of the brains behind COMSA. When you visit her farm, it is immediately obvious that she is a woman of action and a natural leader among her employees.
