68 widows came together to form the Hingakawa Association in 2006

The association puts a strong focus on quality to guarantee a permanent consistency of its coffees.

After the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994, the women of Rushashi, in the Gakenke district, were left to head their families alone.
This sad event left the bereaved families facing extreme poverty.
Wishing to overcome this, 68 widows came together to form the Hingakawa Association in 2006. Today, the association reached such a success that it counts a total of 815 women members.

Hinga Kawa coop is certified organic and fair trade.
The association puts a strong focus on quality to guarantee a permanent consistency of its coffees. They have their own drying beds, it allows them to control the quality from the field all the way to the process. The association has a common plot of 2500 coffee trees and is in the process of buying land to increase production. Each farmer owns an average of 200 coffee trees. The coffee is then transported to a washing station shared with Abakundakawa.

The cooperative HINGA KAWA COOP

The association was founded in 2006 by 68 widows of the Tutsi genocide. Today, the association reached such a success that it counts a total of 815 women members.

The association was founded with three main objectives:

  • To empower women in the coffee value chain.
  • To share agriculture best practices & to integrate this practices in a commercial spectrum to create a source of income.
  • To create a safe place for women to gather & share experiences.

HingaKawa's vision is to fight poverty and become economically independent through coffee growing and to develop the entrepreneurial spirit of its members in order to diversify their income.

Since its creation, the association has been involved in various projects:

  • The sewing project: This project aims to train young people in the community in sewing. Not only does this provide an additional source of income for the women and their families, but it also allows the young women to learn a new trade.
  • Guest house: In partnership with the Abakunda Kawa cooperative, Hinga Kawa is building a project that will provide additional income for women farmers and contribute to the region's reputation as a tourist destination.

Hingakawa has a positive impact on the community. Hingakawa members contribute to the generation of income for over 3,260 families. Members of the association benefit from a health insurance scheme for the whole family and contribute to the Ejo Heza savings plan, a long-term retirement savings scheme for all Rwandan citizens, launched by the government in partnership with Access to Finance Rwanda.
