The terroir Venda Nova

Venda Nova do Imigrante is a town located in the lands of the State of Espirito Santo. The region of Venda Nova has the highest altitudes of Espirito Santo, some areas reaching 1600masl. It is a mountainous region, standing between two high picks: the Pico da Bandeira (2900 masl) and the Pedra Azul national park. The small city has been created and populated with Italian migrants that often worked in the coffee plantations of the area. Eprirto Santo is a narrow land located at the south of Bahia and Between Minas Gerais and the Ocean. Historically, Espirito Santo was known for its production of Robusta (locally known as Conilon). The production of Arabica used to have a bad reputation. The high humidity in the air coming from the ocean has been a real challenge to process and dry coffee properly. If the Humidity in the air can be a liability, the high hills and the climate make create the perfect conditions to produce specialty coffee. The gap in temperature (hot during the day and cold diring the night time) allows the slow maturation of the cherries. After the flower season, temperatures can often drop below 10°C during night. Today, producers are better equipped and have learned to control their drying process. This has helped the region to gain visibility in the specialty world, so much so that the 2017’s edition of cup of Excellence took place in Venda nova do Imigrante. The hills of Venda Nova do Imigrante gather a great number of small producers, owing farms going from 2ha to 12ha. They usually sell their coffees at low prices to the cooperatives or big exporters. The Bobolink projects buy their coffee at a fixed and fair price, helps the producers to know the quality of their coffee by teaching them how to cup and to access quality.
