Our Coffee Range

angel barrera | 2019-03-12

When I started out with Belco, and was still a trainee, we would wonder how best to present and sell our coffees. Most importers compiled a list of coffees sorted by origin alone (some still do), in other words according to where the coffee came from, which wasn’t very effective in terms of traceability.
At the time we stocked mainly regional coffees, some Estate coffees and some sourced from producers who were experimenting in their plantations (take for example Arnaud Causse, in Ecuador, who sorted his coffees by variety and even created a profile from a blend of two different varieties, something he still does today). We knew there were differences, in terms of cup and quality, and it also affected purchasing.

How could we effectively sort our coffees in a way that was clear and transparent not only for us, but also for producers and roasters interested in working with us? Because we are based in Bordeaux, and because Alexandre has worked in the field of (and also loves) wine, it made perfect sense for us to build a bridge between these two industries, combining their approaches to traceability and to terroir typicity. We built our range strategy up around this, a strategy that we adapt whenever possible to meet the needs and requirements of both roasters and producers.

Our Belco ranges might therefore be explained as follows:

a) Label range

Belco commitments

* Traceability: regional at minimum
* Cup quality: SCA score of 80+
* Grain pro: the whole range, except the natural Brazilians due to high rotation
* Coffees are always shipped in the first months following the harvest to guarantee freshness and good preservation during storage
* Always new harvests
* Quantities imported: one container minimum

Purpose

* As coffee: components for blends
* Target roasters: medium to large

b) Terroir range

Belco commitments

* Traceability: micro-regional
* Cup quality: SCA score of 83+
* Grain pro: the whole range
* Coffees are always shipped in the first months following the harvest to guarantee freshness and good preservation during storage
* Always new harvests
* Quantities imported: one container minimum

Purpose

* As coffee: components for high-end blends
* Target roasters: medium to large, or micro-roasters experiencing growth and seeking interest among professionals

c) Estate range

Belco commitments

* Traceability: right back to the farm
* Cup quality: SCA score of 83+
* Grain pro: the whole range
* Coffees are always shipped in the first months following the harvest to guarantee freshness and good preservation during storage
* Always new harvests
* Quantities imported: between 50 bags and one container

Purpose

* As coffee: used mainly as a pure origin, launched as limited editions by large roasters, which allows us to import large quantities; these coffees are also more exclusive and unique on account of their traceability (a face behind the coffee), so they are also used widely by medium-sized and smaller roasters. And they can be used as components for high-end blends.
* Roasters: all types

d) Microlot range

Belco commitments

* Traceability: right back to the plot, specific processes, single varieties
* Cup quality: SCA score of 86+
* Grain pro: the whole range
* Coffees are always shipped as soon as they are available for export
* Always new harvests
* Quantities imported: between 1 and 50 bags

Purpose

* As coffee: for use exclusively as a pure origin
* Roasters: all types Feel free to check out our prices, then determine your needs for each of your coffees (blends for professionals, blends for your counter, seasonal pure origin, etc). And don’t forget, at Belco you also enjoy the services of a dedicated sales rep who can help you develop your range, so don’t hesitate to ask for help 😉 Ángel, Sourcing & Purchasing Important: You earn points for each kg of coffee you purchase (the number of points depends on the coffee range). These points can then be exchanged at our centre for training courses, for yourself and your employees."
