We have been working with the Frères du Noun farm for 5 years. It is situated in the town of Kouoptamo, in the department of Noun in western Cameroon, between Lake Bamendjing and Lake Petpenoun. Created in 1931, the plantation was then abandoned for a long period until 2004 when it was bought by two brothers, Patrick and Jacques Desplaces.
This farm located at an altitude of 1,100 metresis particularly interesting, not only on account of its terroirbut also for the Java variety chosen. The farm was completely replanted with Java Arabica coffee between 2006 and 2009, under the guidance of CIRAD expert Didier Snoeck and a former producer, Mr Drotz. Today it has about 63 hectares of coffee trees, spread over a volcanic soil rich in basalt which gives the coffee a certain acidity. The bushes have been planted every 2 metres for a density of 1,666 coffee plants per hectare, representing a total of 100,000 coffee trees.
A 3-metre distance has been left between each row to allow farmers to clean the plantation without damaging the plants.
Jacques and Patrick are aware of the importance of shade for creating a microclimate conducive to good cherry development, so they have planted Leucaena glauca type shrubs every 6 coffee plants.
Their coffee trees also benefit from a volcanic soil rich in basalt which gives the coffee a certain acidity.
In addition to producing an excellent coffee, the Frères du Noun plantation plays an important economic and social role as the region’s leading employer since being taken over in 2004. And to support the region’s development, the farm has also financed the construction of a new primary school.

Patrick and Jacques Desplaces are two brothers who arrived in Cameroon as children in 1955. They began their career in the coffee industry in 1985 with the purchase of a roasting company in Douala called La Brulerie Moderne.
It was in 2004 that these French producers fell in love with their adopted country and bought Frères du Noun, a farm that had been abandoned for several years.
