An initiative to support women coffee producers.

Women play a vital role, taking part in every stage of the supply chain but often handling the most time-consuming, most seasonal and lowest-paid tasks (like sowing, harvesting and sorting). Studies show that when women manage household income, there are many benefits: better child education, health, economic stability and overall family wellbeing.

This year, we are celebrating Christmas with Oscar Daza's coffees, our partner in Colombia since 2017. 

A few years ago, Belco and producer Oscar Daza (owner and manager of La Pradera) decided to invest in the purchase of a plot of land (under the project name “Pilos Del Café”) backing onto the local public school in Aratoca.

On this plot, the school's students learn about agronomy and agroecology and discover all the stages of coffee production, from planting to processing. The coffees produced on this plot enable the school to continue operating year after year.

This year, we want to treat the school children to a festive Christmas snack and finance the planting of young Laurina coffee trees, a rare variety, on their plot.

For every kilo of coffee you buy, €0.10 will be donated to the Christmas project for the children—and Belco will double the amount!

Meeting El Maestro: Don Herbert Betancourt

Organically produced by an Indigenous community near Nevado del Huila National Park, this coffee protects over 4,000 hectares of conservation land while honoring ancestral traditions. Crafted from Caturro, Colombia, and Castillo varietals and processed naturally to save water, it delivers a cup that is sweet, fruity, and complex&nbsp;a true reflection of peace, sustainability, and excellence.

&nbsp;Colombia produces exclusively Arabica, because Robusta is neither supported nor authorized by the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation, the FNC. This means we cannot export Robusta because there can be no certificate of origin, and because no phytosanitary rules have been established for this type of coffee. Coffee production is the main source of employment in rural areas.&nbsp;
The coffee-growing regions are mountainous areas. 90% of producers have very small plantations (0.80 hectares on average). The average age of a grower is 53. Many producers practice mixed farming to diversify their income (chickens, eggs, etc.). Numerous local associations and cooperatives have been set up to help growers through the various stages of the supply chain: growing, harvesting, post-harvest processing, transport, packaging, projects and certification.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Colombia is located at the north-western tip of South America and covers an area of 1,141,748 km². It is bordered by the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. It is crossed from north to south by the Andes mountain range, which divides into three branches near its southern end: the Cordillera Occidental, the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera Oriental. To the east of the Cordillera Oriental lie the Orinoco river, the Llanos plain and the Colombian Amazon. Colombia’s other mountain ranges include the Serranía del Baudó and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Six of their summits stand higher than 5,000 metres. The different climates are determined by the amount of rainfall. In the plains and lowlands (situated at an altitude of less than 500 metres), the average temperature is 25 °C. The mountains and valleys located at altitudes of over 500 metres have a wide diversity of climates. They can be very humid, rainy, dry, and even very dry. The country’s size and geographical diversity partly explain the great aromatic diversity and the different harvest periods.&nbsp;

From the heart of the Nevado del Huila Natural Park, this Gesha is cultivated organically by an Indigenous community committed to peace and conservation. With over 4,000 hectares of preserved forest, we craft coffee with respect for nature and tradition.
This lot is a washed Gesha with anaerobic fermentation, carefully processed for 5 days to develop extraordinary complexity. The result is a cup that reveals delicate, exotic notes and a flavor profile as unique as the land and culture that nurture it.

The cherries are pulped and then fermented in water. Microbial activity breaks down the mucilage. After fermentation, they are washed in water to remove the remaining mucilage. The coffee is separated when it has a moisture content of 11%.

Rather than study or work in the big cities, young growers have decided to help each other restore hope to the future of Colombian coffee, within the ASOCANAFI association.
