About this coffee

Along the famous pre-Inca road is a narrow highway with lots of vegetation, known as La Escalera, the scale. Located at 2,950 meters above sea level, amidst unique flora and fauna, this misty road reveals the ruins of ancient constructions of the Chachapoya's culture.

Producers in Peru, as well as other producing countries in Latin America, due to history, tradition and customs, have mainly dedicated themselves to the production of fully washed coffees.

This year we made the decision to keep growing and developing new regions in Peru, always following our work philosophy: Where sourcing makes sense or better said Where coffee makes sense; through our agencies in origin (Belco Colombia and Belco El Salvador) and the energy and willingness of our new partner from Origin Coffee Lab to do something different, we took on a challenge together: to develop natural coffees.

Belco has invested in supporting producers in their efforts to improve their coffee processing skills, in particular by training them in the Natural process.

This coffee is a varietal blen of: Typica, Catuaí, Castillo, Villa Sarchi, Marsellesa, Caturra, Bourbon, San Antonio and Catimor.

The terroir Ocumal

Ocumal is a terroir in the Peruvian province of Luya. Ocumal is a rather remote region, with a strong and enormous cultural heritage and also many farms that are only accessible by long paths and narrow bridges. As a result, the farms in this region still bear the vestiges of ancient coffee-making practices. The town centre is easy to access, making it a good collection point for coffee. It is a diverse agricultural area with many varieties of fruits such as bananas, yucca, coconuts, papayas. The climate in this region is a bit cool, which makes the drying process of the coffee a bit longer. The area is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and untouched mountains and includes several places of tourist interest such as the ruins of the Chachapoya culture and prehistoric rock paintings.

Project Hands On Coffee

Getting involved in natural coffee production

For this purpose of developing two containers of natural coffee, a technical visit was made by the Quality Control area of the Belco Colombia agency and the field innovation area of the Belco El Salvador agency. During this visit training was provided to the associated producers and technicians involved in this project. The training to producers and field technicians was based on good practices for the harvesting, processing and drying of natural coffees, focusing on the critical points that lead to cup problems.
