Wawalas is a Robusta coffee originating from Garut, in West Java, Indonesia. This region is characterized by a vast plain surrounded by volcanoes, where fertile soils support a diversified agricultural landscape: rice is grown in the valley bottoms, while tea and coffee are cultivated on the volcanic slopes. The farms are located between 800 and 1,300 meters above sea level, in an environment directly shaped by volcanic activity.
This coffee fully reflects the diversity of Indonesian profiles, shaped by a vast territory, agroforestry systems deeply rooted in local practices, and processing methods that vary from one island to another. Located between Sumatra and Bali, Java remains one of the country’s historic coffee-growing regions.
The Wawalas project is built around a structured network of producers. Around 300 farmers harvest fully ripe red cherries and deliver them directly. The coffee is then processed from cherry at a dedicated facility, following a natural process. Annual production ranges between 350 and 500 tonnes of cherries, resulting in approximately 60 tonnes of fine Robusta for the current season.
The coffees come from three distinct areas within the Garut region:
- Leles, around Mount Guntur, at elevations between 800 and 1,300 meters
- Cibatu, around Mount Sadakeling, between 900 and 1,300 meters
- Kadungora, around Mount Mandalawangi, between 800 and 1,200 meters
The main varieties grown are Huni (or Buhun) and Borbor, a Catimor hybrid.
In the Manggarai language, the name “Wawalas” means balance and harmony. Here, it reflects the search for equilibrium between agricultural productivity and ecosystem preservation, at the heart of the agroforestry systems in which this Robusta is cultivated.
