About this coffee

Metad started in 2010 (founded by Aman Adinew later joined by his brother Tariku) in Gedeb Woreda with a wet mill located in Halo Beriti Kebele, where they produce both washed and natural processed coffees. They source cherries from outgrowers in Halo Beriti. The coffee varieties grown by the outgrowers include 74110 and 74140 (distributed by Metad), as well as heirloom varieties. In the Gedeo region, farmers commonly cultivate local landrace varieties such as Dega, Kurume, and Wolisho. Gedeo farmers grow coffee in a polyculture agro-ecologic system known as "garden coffee". Coffee and ensat are usualy intercroped, two plants domesticated by Ethiopian farmers in history.

Metad collects the cherries and processes them at their wet mill. The cherries are dried on African drying beds for approximately three weeks. Once dried, the jenfel (dried pod) is hulled in Gedeb and hand-sorted. The green coffee is then transported to Metad’s dry mill in Legatafo, on the outskirts of Addis Ababa.

Metad oversees the entire post-harvest and export process, maintaining full control over quality, dry milling, and logistics.

Belco and Metad have been working together since 2018, united by a shared vision of quality, environmental responsibility, and respect for the people involved throughout the coffee value chain.

Here are a few words from Tariku Adinew:

"METAD wants to make our community happier and healthier, and we pride ourselves on implementing ethically and socially responsible practices across our company. A portion of all profits are reinvested back into the community, going towards the building of clinics, roads and digging wells for safe drinking water, among other initiatives. We have adopted a local elementary school, providing over 850 students with much needed supplies and financial support, we also provide University scholarships to 105 disadvantaged students from our area, and we’ve partnered with Grounds-for-Health, a US-based NGO working with coffee farming communities to eradicate cervical cancer in women. Over 70% of METAD’s current farm workforce are women."

The farm Halo Beriti

Haloberiti is a village located in the southern part of the Ethiopian district of Yirgacheffe Gedeb, Ethiopia, in the Gedio zone. This is where our partner EDN Ethiopian Coffee's washing station is located. Here, coffee is cultivated and processed at altitudes ranging from 1900 to 2300 meters above sea level, thus benefiting from an optimal environment for coffee production. The majority of Haloberiti coffee is grown in close proximity to farmers' gardens.

A few words about Metad

The Metad company was founded through the impetus of a family long involved in coffee, as the grandparents of founder Aman Adinew were already coffee producers and traders. Before Metad, Aman Adinew was president of ECX (Ethiopia Commodity Exchange).

Metad was founded in 2014 to meet the specialty coffee market's expectations regarding traceability, quality, sustainability, and fair remuneration for producers.

He founded Metad with family members, American citizens who, like him, chose to return to their home country, driven by a desire to develop high-performing, quality operations. Aware of the shortcomings that could affect the Ethiopian coffee sector, they chose to promote outstanding coffees by focusing on traceability, which ensures superior value for the crops from their region. Today, Metad is among the pioneers in developing a structured specialty coffee value chain in Ethiopia.

The coffees handled by Metad are rigorously traced at every stage of the process. Lots are primarily received in parchment and undergo several mechanical sorting steps, each removing a specific type of defect, before a final Hand Sorting. This attention to processing and quality control significantly contributes to the final quality of the coffees.

Metad supports social and environmental projects whose local roots ensure their success. For coffee producers, Metad implements regular training and pre-payments for harvests, which provide these farmers with greater stability. The group has also already distributed over 600,000 coffee seedlings to the farmers they work with.

More broadly, Metad has, for example, helped construct roads. They have also funded the establishment of primary schools, covering all expenses (materials, teachers' salaries, etc.) for 800 students. They provide scholarships for 105 disadvantaged students in the Gedeo zone. Metad also implements specific support projects for women in producer communities, particularly in disease prevention and screening.
