Originating from the botanical garden of Coffea Diversa, this lot highlights the Maragogype 928 variety, a rare and distinctive expression of the Maragogype family within the project’s botanical conservatory.
Coffea Diversa is a pioneering project founded in the early 2000s by José Padilla and Gonzalo Hernández, driven by a radically different vision of traditional coffee farming. Designed as a coffee botanical garden, the project focuses on preserving, observing, and showcasing coffee’s genetic diversity through the cultivation of hundreds of rare botanical varieties. Today, Coffea Diversa hosts the world’s largest private collection of coffee botanical varieties, with more than 800 specimens, only a portion of which are currently produced as micro-lots.
Maragogype 928 is a natural mutation of Typica, originally discovered in Brazil in the late 19th century. The 928 lineage differs from conventional Maragogype through its highly open vegetative structure, with exceptionally wide spacing between branches along the main stem and between buds. This morphology results in a sparse canopy, allowing the structure of the tree to remain clearly visible. The plants are very tall and produce exceptionally large beans, emblematic of the Maragogype family. This variety is also known for its extremely low yields and susceptibility to coffee leaf rust, which explains its rarity in production.
Within Coffea Diversa, the Maragogype 928 lineage has given rise to several natural mutations, including red-, pink-, and yellow-cherry expressions, illustrating the genetic richness and complexity explored within the botanical garden.
This approach allows for a faithful and precise expression of Maragogype 928, highlighting clean, elegant, and structured profiles closely linked to its botanical identity and extraordinary morphology.
