Originating from the botanical garden of Coffea Diversa, this lot highlights the Dilla Alghe Jaune variety, a rare Ethiopian wild variety with a singular genetic heritage.
Coffea Diversa is a pioneering project founded in the early 2000s by José Padilla and Gonzalo Hernández, with a radically different vision from traditional coffee cultivation. Conceived as a botanical coffee garden, the project aims to preserve, observe, and enhance the genetic diversity of coffee through the cultivation of hundreds of rare botanical varieties. Today, Coffea Diversa houses the world's largest private collection of botanical coffee varieties, with over 800 specimens, of which only a portion is currently produced as micro-lots.
The Dilla Alghe is an Ethiopian wild variety originating from the vicinity of the town of Dilla, in southwestern Ethiopia. It is distinguished by its marked vegetative development: tall trees, wide spacing between branches and between buds, and young shoots with reddish hues. Its beans are long and large-sized, reflecting this particular plant structure.
Like many wild varieties, the Dilla Alghe exhibits very low yields and a high susceptibility to diseases, which severely limits its production and enhances its rarity. These characteristics make it a demanding variety to cultivate, but with sensory potential closely linked to its unique genetic heritage.
