Originating from the botanical garden of Coffea Diversa, this lot highlights the Dalle Yellow variety, a rare wild Ethiopian coffee with a distinctive botanical heritage.
Coffea Diversa is a pioneering project founded in the early 2000s by José Padilla and Gonzalo Hernández, driven by a radically different vision of traditional coffee farming. Designed as a coffee botanical garden, the project focuses on preserving, observing, and showcasing coffee’s genetic diversity through the cultivation of hundreds of rare botanical varieties. Today, Coffea Diversa hosts the world’s largest private collection of coffee botanical varieties, with more than 800 specimens, only a portion of which are currently produced as micro-lots.
The Dalle variety is a wild Ethiopian coffee originating from southern Ethiopia, near the town of Irgalem, the capital of the Sidamo region. The coffee trees display a tall growth habit, with long internodes and young leaf tips showing a reddish coloration-traits typical of ancient, lightly domesticated genetic lines. Dalle Yellow is a natural mutation whose cherries turn yellow when fully ripe. This variety is characterized by extremely low yields and a high susceptibility to diseases, which explains its rarity and its primary presence within conservation and botanical exploration projects.
