Originating from the botanical garden of Coffea Diversa, this lot highlights the Mokka variety, a rare coffee with a distinctive botanical heritage, integrated into the project’s genetic conservatory.
Coffea Diversa is a pioneering project founded in the early 2000s by José Padilla and Gonzalo Hernández, driven by a radically different vision of traditional coffee farming. Designed as a coffee botanical garden, the project focuses on preserving, observing, and showcasing coffee’s genetic diversity through the cultivation of hundreds of rare botanical varieties. Today, Coffea Diversa hosts the world’s largest private collection of coffee botanical varieties, with more than 800 specimens, only a portion of which are currently produced as micro-lots.
The Mokka variety is generally considered a natural mutation of Bourbon, originating from La Réunion Island (formerly known as Bourbon Island), and shows close genetic links to Laurina. Another theory, however, suggests a distinct origin in Yemen. This variety is characterized by a very compact growth habit, with a conical shape, very short internodes, and small elliptical leaves. The flowers are small, and both the fruits and beans are among the smallest known in Arabica, with a round shape. The Mokka variety is also highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust, which contributes to its rarity and its cultivation mainly within conservation and botanical exploration projects.
This approach allows for a faithful and precise expression of the Mokka variety, highlighting clean, delicate, and finely structured profiles closely linked to its botanical identity and unique morphology.
