Originating from the botanical garden of Coffea Diversa, this lot highlights the Rume Sudan variety, a rare coffee with a distinctive genetic heritage, integrated into the project’s botanical conservatory.
Coffea Diversa is a pioneering project founded in the early 2000s by José Padilla and Gonzalo Hernández, driven by a radically different vision of traditional coffee farming. Designed as a coffee botanical garden, the project focuses on preserving, observing, and showcasing coffee’s genetic diversity through the cultivation of hundreds of rare botanical varieties. Today, Coffea Diversa hosts the world’s largest private collection of coffee botanical varieties, with more than 800 specimens, only a portion of which are currently produced as micro-lots.
The Rume Sudan variety is a wild Sudanese Arabica originating from south-eastern Sudan, on the Boma Plateau, near the village of Rume, from which it takes its name. The plants display a tall growth habit, with medium spacing between branches and branch buds. This variety is known for its resistance to diseases, particularly Coffee Berry Disease, as well as moderate yields. The beans are large and elongated, characteristic of this ancient African genetic line.
This approach allows for a faithful and precise expression of Rume Sudan, highlighting clean, structured, and elegant profiles closely linked to its botanical identity and African origin.
