In the agricultural sector, and more specifically in the coffee sector, women are heavily involved on farms, representing over 70% of the workforce in the fields, harvesting, bean sorting... Yet, the work done by women unfortunately too often remains in the background due to a strong tendency to idealize male labor.
The women from the San Juan and Aljiri cooperatives in Caranavi have come together around the Matriarcas project. In a group of 20, they produce coffee with complete autonomy.
Together, they seek to defend the role of women in Bolivia, their freedom, as well as the improvement of their income and their current working conditions. The project also aims to offer training to local women to help them gain autonomy.
