Farm

Antonia Giron
Tenejapa

About

Doña Antonia cultivates coffee in a "passive" way. Coffee trees are between 25 and 40 years old and the care they ask for is simple and basic. The richness of the terroir and the soil is surely a key element. Antonia and her daughters invest heavily in harvests and post-harvest processes and do their best despite the lack of dedicated coffee infrastructure in the area. Antonia participates in all the assemblies of producers and she rigorously applies the advice provided. Antonia is over 80 but even her own family does not know exactly how much. Originally from Tzeltal, she does not speak Spanish and lives with two of her daughters. All three are dedicated to domestic chores and coffee production. His son-in-law Pedro helps them occasionally. The coffee arrived in the Tenejapa area lately, Antonia was already an adult. Her husband started in coffee growing but since his passing, Antonia and her two daughters have taken over the culture. Generally, Antonia sells her coffee to neighbors who resell it in the nearby town. Today and thanks to Pedro, Antonia has been part of the Cafeologo project since 2017 and one of its coffees has been awarded the first prize of the Cup of Excellence.
