Coffee has been produced in the Intag river basin for more than a century, most of it at altitudes of over 1,500 metres. The province of Imbabura, which is popular with tourists, is surrounded by the snow-capped Cotacachi mountains. It then extends all the way to the Ecuadorian border, over a patchwork of land shaped by high peaks, deep ravines and small streams forming channels and then major rivers irrigating the whole area. Coffee is harvested in this region from July onwards.
