ASOCANAFI
Gaitania

About

ASOCANAFI is a cooperative of indigenous coffee growers located in the area of Gaitania, land of Planadas. Gaitania has its own history, the first name of this village was "Colonia Penal y Agrícola del Sur de Atá". In 1920, this territory was decreed as a prison for prisoners belonging to the liberal political party. At the end of the 1940s, the government closed the prisons for political reasons and the eastern region was called Gaitania in honor of the liberal leader Jorge Eliecer Gaitan, who was assassinated in Bogotá. The native indigenous communities are the Nasa We'sx, they represent 30% of the population. In the 18th century, they moved between Cauca and southern Tolima, but the region's social complexity made them sedentary. Later, in 1991, the Colombian government gave the indigenous people the right to live on their lands with social independence. This gave birth to the village of Nasa We'sx, a land protected by this indigenous community and guardian of one of the largest natural reserves in Colombia (the snow volcano of Huila). This land and their beliefs, respect for Mother Earth, make them the best allies to produce one of the most respectful coffees in Colombia according to the principles of organic farming. They have partnered with several coffee producer organizations to promote coffee cultivation, ensure family income and strengthen their indigenous community. The indigenous Nasa We'sx will go down in Colombian history, as they were the first community to sign a peace agreement with the FARC in 1996. In 2016, 20 years later, a peace agreement between the government of Colombia and the FARC guerrillas was signed.
