About
Attikan Estate is one of four farms within Sangameshwar Coffee Estates, nestled in the Biligiri Rangan Hills of southern Karnataka. Established in 1890 by Randolph Hayton Morris, a Scotsman captivated by the region's wild beauty, the plantation was later passed down to his son before being acquired by the Vaidyanathan family in the 1960s.
The name “Attikan” originates from the numerous wild fig trees (“Atti” in the local language) found on the property. These trees are an integral part of the farm's ecosystem and contribute to the identity of this unique terroir.
Located at an altitude of approximately 1,600 meters, Attikan ranks among the highest coffee production areas in southern India. The farm spans nearly 150 hectares and benefits from an exceptional environment, bordered by a protected forest that harbors remarkable wildlife including elephants, tigers, leopards, gaurs, black bears, spotted deer, and numerous bird species.
The coffee trees grow under a significant canopy of shade trees, benefiting from particularly favorable conditions for the slow maturation of the coffee cherries.
Several Arabica varieties are cultivated here, notably Sln 9, Sln 795, Catimor, Kent, Yellow Catuai, and Chandragiri.
As with all Sangameshwar Coffee Estates' farms, particular attention is paid to soil fertility. The teams prioritize the use of on-site organic amendments such as coffee pulp, coconut fibers, and compost, to maintain the natural balance of the plots.
The farm also maintains a strong connection with the local community. A large proportion of the employees belong to the Sholiga community, which has been present in the region for several generations. Families benefit from housing on the plantation, access to drinking water, a medical facility, and a crèche, while a nearby public school facilitates the schooling of children.
The harvest is carried out manually with several successive passes to select only perfectly ripe cherries. This meticulous approach, combined with Attikan's natural conditions, contributes to the production of coffees renowned for their quality and faithful expression of the Biligiri Rangan Hills terroir.
