Badda
Dulli Anfilloo

About

This natural coffee, named after the Badda forest in which it is harvested, is collected by Yerosati from among several small farmers. Badda is located in the terroir of Anfillo in the Nekemte appellation, in western Ethiopia. “Badda” means “highlands” in Oromo, in reference to the forest complex located at an altitude of more than 1,800 metres. The Anfillo terroir is a place where coffee has been grown for several centuries. According to oral tradition, coffee consumption is an ancient regional custom, and inhabitants used to plant coffee in kitchen gardens. The plantations then grew to meet foreign demand, first on the part of Greek and Armenian traders in the 19th century, then Italians at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, coffee production has held an essential place in the region’s agricultural model and still draws on ancient know-how. All coffee is harvested by hand and without use of chemicals. Badda coffee is certified organic. It is grown in a forest complex with a unique biodiversity, made up of singular, often century-old, endemic species that provide optimum shade for the coffee trees. Local farmers have long known how to combine these different trees in such a way as to maintain a perfect harmony within the forest and to protect its rare environment. Coffee production, which is an integral part of this agroforestry model, helps to maintain the biodiversity.
