Dulli
Dulli Anfilloo

About

Dulli is the name of a mountain in Wallagga on which farmers cultivate the natural coffee offered here. It has steep slopes, and farming its plots is no mean feat. The plots are on average ten hectares in size and sheltered by a rich tree canopy, particularly conducive to coffee production. Coffee has been cultivated here for several centuries. It began in the small town near Ashi, just 3 kilometres from Dulli, where there are a large number of ancient wild coffee trees. Population growth and searches for available land then pushed farmers up to higher ground, including in the Dulli mountain. They planted agricultural crops there, and in particular coffee, which grows easily beneath the dense forest. The diversity of species ensures optimum shade conditions for cherries. There is the Qararo, for example, an endemic tree that can grow to over 40 metres in height and which is an important contributor to this vegetation cover. Because the plots on the Dulli mountain are hard to reach, the farmers use harvesting techniques based on manual labour and rigorous cherry selection. Belco is helping them to continue this meticulous cultivation method, which is part of an agroforestry system and ensures its preservation.
