Farm

El Naranjo
Santa Ana

About

Emilio Lopez runs the company Odyssey Coffees. He produces his own coffee but has been processing and importing coffee from neighbouring farms such as El Naranjo since 2009. Located in the Apaneca-Ilamatepec region, in the Santa Ana area between 1300 and 1500 meters above sea level, El Naranjo Farm was established in 1915. This farm is a matriarchal model owned by two sisters: Amada Milla de Angulo and Maria Aida Milla de Bolaños. Together they cultivate bourbon, pacamara and, to a lesser extent, caturra on 10 hectares. El Naranjo is a place of great biodiversity, with forest plantations, coffee plantations, grasslands and crops. There are 12 endangered and 58 threatened plant species (fungi, bromeliads, orchids, bryophytes, agaves and extremophilic bacteria) as well as 12 endemic bird species and other vertebrate groups. Over time, Maria Aida and her sons and daughters have taken over the work and management of the farm, helping their mother and aunt to preserve this family legacy and still working directly with Emilio and Odyssey Coffees to process and sell their coffees. Naranjo Farm sells its cherries to Odyssey. The cherries are then washed in Emilio's Wet Mill before being exported.
