The Hambela woreda is located just over 400 km south of Addis Ababa in the Oromo region, in the Guji appellation. It is characterised by a largely wooded landscape of old-growth forest and mixed species. The Metad Group owns several coffee production and collection facilities in the region. It has partnered with over 3,200 coffee producers spread over seven villages. They all farm small, densely wooded plots by hand at an altitude of about 2,000 metres. Both Metad and our Belco teams are very aware of the need to conserve this natural heritage, which improves the quality of the coffee produced here. The number one challenge in maintaining this environment lies in preserving the know-how of its farmers. To prevent this ecological diversity from disappearing, the Group has distributed over 600,000 plants free of charge to the farmers it works with. Metad is also taking concrete steps to protect the environment and support social projects. It is helping farmers to obtain organic certification and financing the construction of roads, schools, etc. It is these initiatives, combined with the high quality of the coffee produced here, that encouraged Belco to add these Hambela coffees to its range.
