Forêt de Wabaa
Anfilloo

About

Wabaa is a forest famous for its ancient coffee trees. It is a place where coffee shrubs grow wild. According to legend, the very first coffee trees were planted here “15 generations” ago by Godi, a man from Kaffa said to be the founder of the village of Wabaa. Although this is something that cannot be verified, because the facts have been passed down orally from generation to generation, they nonetheless testify to an ancient coffee culture tradition and know-how in this part of the Anfillo terroir. The amount of land dedicated to coffee production has increased overthree periods. First in the 19th century due to growing demand for coffee, particularly from Greek and Armenian traders. Then in the 20th century, when the market grew as a result of Italian demand. Then in the 1980s, when environmental projects were initiatedby the EU in response to the notorious famines, in order to further expand the coffee forest and support local farmers. The plantations developed first along the road linking Dembi Dollo and Gambella. Coffee production then spread gradually to the highlands as farmers began seeking available land as a result of population growth and land pressure. The cherries harvested in the original Wabaa forest are known as “long berries” because of their longer shape. Various other varieties have since been introduced, notably under the guidance of the Jimma research centre, which has encouraged the cultivation of more original coffee trees in Wabaa.
