Gamoji
Gamoji Anfilloo

About

The Gamoji coffee is harvested in the forest of the same name, in the heart of the Anfilloo terroir, under the Nekemte appellation, in western Ethiopia. This forest coffee offers spicy notes and its particularity lies in being produced on the so-called lower lands of this terroir, between 1500 and 1700 m of altitude. The term «gamoji» precisely recalls this, as it means «low land» in Oromo, the regional language. The Anfilloo terroir is an area where coffee cultivation has existed for several centuries. Oral traditions attest to ancient coffee consumption habits by the inhabitants, who then planted coffee in family gardens. The plantations later grew due to external demand, first from Greek and Armenian traders in the 19th century, then Italians at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, coffee production has held an essential place in the agriculture of this region and still relies on ancient know-how. All harvests are carried out by hand and without the use of any chemical products. Although located in the lower areas of Anfilloo, the Gamoji forest complex remains difficult to access, due to steep slopes and dense vegetation. The forest is composed of unique, often centuries-old endemic species, which provide optimal shade for the coffee trees. The canopy is diverse, with, for example, 40-meter homi (Prunus Africana) and about twenty-meter wadessa (Cordia Abyssinica), etc. Coffee cultivation allows for the maintenance of this biodiversity.
