Garjeda Anfilloo
Garjeda Anfilloo

About

Included in the Anfilloo terroir, not far from the Suddi forest as they belong to the same mountainous range, the Garjeda forest stands out for its vastness. So extensive that it is difficult to delimit, it is also a forest with very dense vegetation, made up of endemic and ancient species. For example, it shelters homi (Prunus Africana) which can reach 40 meters, and wadessa (Cordia Abyssinica) of about twenty meters, which associate very well with coffee plants. As everywhere else in the Anfilloo terroir, coffee has been produced here for several centuries. Firstly, to satisfy local demand, as the inhabitants of this region of Ethiopia have long had a traditional and family consumption of coffee. Secondly, to meet an increase in international demand. As early as the 19th century, Greek and Armenian traders came here in search of high-quality coffee. Italian merchants followed in the 20th century. Coffee cultivation has since held an essential place in the agricultural model of this terroir. The farmers' know-how is based on an exclusively manual cultivation of the land, combining coffee, food crops, and agroforestry in a balanced way. This helps preserve the rich environment of Wallagga. Furthermore, a part of the Garjeda forest is a natural reserve, untouched by agriculture. The Garjeda forest coffee is collected within this vast area, from several hundred farmers from 5 different villages. Garjeda is the name of the most important village in this area.
