About

The Giakanja Coffee Factory is a washing station that has been owned by the Giakanja Farmers Cooperative Society since 2000. The cooperative has 1,450 members, mostly small farmers rather than large plantations. They cultivate SL 28, SL 34 and Ruiru 11 at an altitude of between 1,750 and 1,800 metres. Most is grown in plots situated adjacent to the producer’s home. The objective of this cooperative is to prepare cherries, share profits among farmers, give crop advances, certify young coffee plants and transport coffee to the Karatina mill in the Nyeri region. The farmers also receive financial assistance to help pay their children’s school fees. The long-term aim is to increase coffee production through training, with seminars on more sustainable agricultural practices.
