La Reserva
Ciudad Bolivar

About

Finca La Reserva is located in the Antioquia region, where coffee was first introduced to Colombia more than 180 years ago. There are many different climates and micro-terroirs in this region, offering an interesting diversity of cultivated varieties. The Ciudad Bolivar terroir, located southwest of Antioquia, attaches great importance to coffee production, since its economy relies on this industry. Coffee is a means of subsistence, progress and development for thousands of families, who have been practising the art of coffee production for generations. La Reserva was acquired by Catalina Vasquez in 2018 when previous owners could not maintain it anymore, because of insufficient funds due to the coffee price being so low. The previous owners were also traditional coffee growers and did not know much about how to grow specialty coffee. Although the farm has been abandoned for the last three years and only 10 percent of the lots were in production, but an eager manager Juan Felipe saw the potential which this high altitude and fertile lands had, and took the initiative to give a new life to this beautiful farm. Its name comes very naturally. More than half of the land is a protected natural reserve, where various specious live, including endangered Andean bear also known as a spectacled bear. Managed by Catalina Vasquez, a passionate producer belonging to the younger generation of Colombians keen on giving the coffee industry a new lease of life, this farm grows different varieties of coffee at altitudes between 1,650 and 1,930 metres. Coffee preparation has been reviewed on the advice of Marjorie, an agricultural engineer from Belco, and greenhouses built to ensure more homogeneous drying of the coffee. These changes have significantly improved the final coffee quality. This year, we journeyed to the farm for a first cupping and to visit the newly optimised farm. It is a farm that has now clearly shown its potential and we hope our partnership will continue in the long term.
