Rwanda's Southern Province, characterised by its green hills, is a major player in national coffee production, with key districts such as Huye, Nyamagabe and Nyaruguru.
Coffee production in this province is mainly based on a model of small family farms, most of which are no larger than one hectare. Most farmers practice polyculture, combining coffee with other food crops.
Coffee processing has evolved towards wet processing, with many washing stations in the region. The coffee produced is known for its citrus and red fruit notes and balanced acidity.
However, the sector faces challenges such as price volatility, climate change and ageing plantations. In response, development initiatives are being implemented, including the renewal of coffee trees, training in sustainable farming practices, and improving market access and coffee traceability.
