About
Located in the canton of Los Arenales, on the border of the Sonsonate and Santa Ana departments, Finca Las Nubes stretches across the heart of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec region, one of El Salvador's most renowned coffee terroirs.
The farm is situated between 1,625 and 1,685 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Santa Ana volcano. Volcanic activity has significantly shaped the identity of the terroir.
During the 2005 eruption, significant quantities of ash covered the region. Over the years, these deposits have integrated into the farm's soils and now contribute to their mineral richness, while requiring rigorous agronomic management to preserve their balance.
Driven by Ernesto Lima Mena, Las Nubes is cultivated using an approach based on soil health and the natural functioning of the ecosystem. For nearly twenty years, agricultural practices have prioritized organic matter input, the preservation of biodiversity, and the development of microbiological life in the soils.
The farm's agroforestry system notably relies on a shade canopy of approximately 50%, provided by a network of Ingas and forest species that contribute to thermal regulation, soil protection, and the maintenance of local biodiversity. Weeding and fertilization are carried out manually to precisely meet the needs of the plots.
This long-term vision has enabled Las Nubes to obtain Organic Agriculture and Rainforest Alliance certifications, demonstrating both its environmental commitment and its good social practices.
In 2026, the farm was also recognized during the Soil of Excellence competition organized by Belco, ranking among the top ten coffee soils evaluated in El Salvador. This recognition highlights the coherence between the agronomic practices implemented on the ground, the quality of the soils, and the sensory expression of the coffees produced at Las Nubes.
Today, the farm constitutes a remarkable example of how sustainable terroir management can contribute to producing high-quality coffees while strengthening the resilience of agricultural systems.
