A few words about Butorangwe

Butorangwe (or Butorangue in French), is located on the Ishungu-Lugenda peninsula on Lake Kivu. The city of Bukavu, with a population of over 5 million, is 40 kilometres south of Butorangwe. In addition to producing excellent coffees in this area, they produce quinine from the bark of the quiquinas and are still in the process of replanting new coffees and reorganising the plots. The washing station is located near Lake Kivu and the coffee cherries are washed with water from the lake. A large workforce is needed to process the coffee, making Butorangwe the most important washing station on the peninsula. The coffee then undergoes its final processing at the Kakondo drying station. More than 350 women sort the coffee each year after the harvest by hand during the quieter periods of the school holidays.
