ABOUT

Our HATHI coffee is produced in the Gayo area. It is grown on the hills of the Barisan Mountains in West Sumatra, on volcanic soil and in a rainforest climate. Geographically, the Gayo Highland region is a plateau flanked by hills and mountains. The coffee trees are grown in the forested mountains surrounding the Leuser National Park. HATHI is a varietal blend from the production of 4 villages under the Burni Telong volcano. It is grown at an altitude of between 1,300 and 1,550 meters above sea level, under the shade of endemic species such as Lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala) and other fruit trees such as avocado, banana and orange. This shaded production protects the local ecosystem. Above the farms is a dense rainforest, located just below the volcano. As is common in Indonesia, this coffee is prepared semi-washed or "wet-hulled".
On average, farmers in the Gayo area each farm 1 to 2 hectares of shade-grown organic coffee.

The coffee is prepared and exported by the Ketiara cooperative.
Ketiara is a women's cooperative. It is located in the highlands of Sumatra Aceh Gayo and has over 25 years of experience in coffee production. Beyond the production and trade of specialty coffee, Ketiara celebrates its value by promoting women and the younger generation of farmers in the coffee industry. Ketiara has 1040 hectares of coffee, owned by a total of 1080 members, 71% of whom are women. For the past 12 years, Ketiara has exported its coffee by itself, with an estimated annual export of 22,500 bags.

What is a WOMEN COFFEE?

We decided to support women producers by identifying their coffees with a WOMEN COFFEE logo. Why?
Because women play a vital role in the industry, they have a strong involvement in the farms and represent more than 70% of the labour force in the fields, harvesting, sorting the beans...
However, only 10% of them are entrepreneurs and only 20% are landowners (including joint ownership with their spouses).
Increasing the income of women producers has a direct and positive impact on the education of children and the comfort of the home.

THE TERROIR OF ACEH

The Gayo Mountains are located in the Aceh region on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. This land combining mountains and tropical forests has a lush flora that offers natural shade to the coffee trees: mimosas, pines, cedars and endemic tropical species.
Monkeys, birds, reptiles, elephants and the famous Sumatran tigers are regulars here.
