Finca Colombia is located in the Antioquia region, where coffee was first introduced to Colombia more than 180 years ago. There are many different climates and micro-terroirs in this region, offering an interesting diversity of cultivated varieties. The Ciudad Bolivar terroir, located southwest of Antioquia, attaches great importance to coffee production, since its economy relies on this industry. Coffee is a means of subsistence, progress and development for thousands of families, who have been practising the art of coffee production for generations.
Finca Colombia has a surface area of 52.3 hectares and produces some 1,500 bags of green coffee each year. Managed by Catalina Vasquez, a passionate producer belonging to the younger generation of Colombians keen on giving the coffee industry a new lease of life, this farm grows different varieties of coffee at altitudes between 1,650 and 1,930 metres. Coffee preparation has been reviewed on the advice of Marjorie, an agricultural engineer from Belco, and greenhouses built to ensure more homogeneous drying of the coffee. These changes have significantly improved the final coffee quality.
This year, we journeyed to the farm for a first cupping and to visit the newly optimised farm. It is a farm that has now clearly shown its potential and we hope our partnership will continue in the long term.
Committed Farm | Young Producer | Quality Improvement | Natural Caturra
Catalina belongs to the family's 4th generation of producers. Yet she was the first to want to take a different approach to selling her farm's coffees by seeking to work directly with an international buyer rather than selling all her production to the surrounding cooperatives in her region.
A few years ago, Catalina contacted Belco to present her coffees. After visiting her in 2017, the producer proved very resourceful in terms of meeting the improvement challenges that we had set. We are very happy to now count her among our partner producers and to see that she is putting so much effort into improving quality.
